Workers hurt in fall from scaffolding - FOX11Online.com Home

HOWARD - One man is dead and another is in stable condition, after an accident at a local paper company.

It took place at Hattiesburg Paper Company in Howard around 7 a.m. Thursday morning.

Two employees with Faith Technologies, a Menasha based contractor, were working on 30 feet up on a scissor lift.

Officials say a forklift, operated by a Paper Company employee, struck the lift.

One man fell, and was pinned under the scaffolding. The other fell, but remained suspended in his safety harness.

Both were unconscious when emergency personnel arrived.

"Faith Technologies was performing routine electrical maintenance at the time of the incident," explained Hattiesburg Paper Company President, Greg Santaga.

The men were taken to St. Vincent Hospital, where 41-year-old Michael Leroy, of Appleton, was pronounced dead. Officials say the other man remains in stable condition.

"Faith Technologies and Hattiesburg Paper Company are committed to safety and a safe work environment and are deeply saddened by the tragedy of this incident," Santaga said.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA along with the Brown County Sheriff's Office are currently investigating.

"Upon hearing of the incident at the factory, OSHA sent an investigator out immediately and they're continuing to investigate the accident that occurred and we have up to six months to complete the investigation," explained Department of Labor, Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Rhonda Burke.

Officials said the plant had been shut down for the day, and are unsure when they'll re-open. An autopsy on Leroy has been scheduled for Friday morning.
