Danwei has a long report on this week’s Shanghai high rise inferno, which killed 79 people, mainly retired teachers. The fire seems to have burned from the outside in. The block was covered by plastic netting held up by bamboo scaffolding as part of a refurbishment job. Add a couple of cowboy welders to the mix and you have your rerun of Towering Inferno.
Reports in Western media seem to have followed the usual pattern of making this into a censorship story. Yet there seems to have been some pretty good reporting. For instance, it’s been revealed that the refurbishment was being carried out by a company owned by the local district chief, who has been duly whisked off for interrogation.
What seems to be making people nervous is the possibility that the Shanghai fire brigade lacked the equipment to be able to tackle conflagrations on the upper floors of tower blocks, which is where most people in Shanghai live. Pictures here.

CommentsI was wondering how scaffolding could burn like this. Wood and plastic netting?!! I thought we were supposed to be intelligent. Another stereotype goes up in flames.
