Construction Scaffolding: Safety First

Safety is, as it should be, the primary focus for the job site. Tools and equipment must be selected with the idea the all workers will go home safely at the end of their shift. While all trades may have tools specific to their jobs, one common tool just about everyone uses is scaffolding. While there are many different types or construction scaffolding available, there are some commonalities all of them share.

The ubiquitous scaffold frames seen on construction sites around the world are designed to allow workers to function safely at various levels above ground level. Manufacturers offer equipment to facilitate the work needs of the various trades, including various accessories to hold paint and tools. While construction scaffolding may be rented locally, if frequent use is anticipated, it is generally more cost effective to purchase scaffolding. Since rental cost are based on time of use, the costs for renting becomes prohibitive for larger jobs. Consider renting, however, when a specific scaffold configuration may only be needed for a short time.

When buying scaffolding, select the configuration carefully. Choose the grade of scaffolding that will be needed to support the weight needs for the specific use anticipated. Costs increase as the capacity rating increases. However, it is often suggested to purchase scaffolding with a higher capacity than anticipated rather than a lower capacity, as safety must be the primary consideration, not cost. Purchase as much scaffolding as needed at one time to allow the best bargaining position. Dealers are more likely to discount one larger purchase than several smaller purchases. Again, work with the dealer to ensure that the needed accessories are selected. Getting to the job site and having to make do with a less than ideal configuration will not allow the most efficient use of manpower.

Make sure that the construction scaffolding used meets all OSHA and private insurance requirements. Liability for on the job accidents is a major issue for all companies. Accidents can be minimized by using scaffolding properly selected and erected for each job site. All scaffolding should be erected and checked carefully by persons trained in the use of scaffolding. It can never be stressed enough that safety must come first.
